Biodiesel and bioethanol in Europe
Biofuel is on the up and up in the European Community. 2004 saw the production of almost 2 million tons of biodiesel and half a ton of bioethanol. These figures show an increase of 30% compared to the 2003 production rate. It is mostly the bigger Common Market countries that try and make themselves known in this new market sector. Currently, Germany is the clear-cut market leader, with France and Italy in hot pursuit.

Europe is the top-producing continent when it comes to biodiesel production. Last year, Germany produced over a million tons, France 350.000 tons, and Italy 320.000 tons. France aims to become market-leader, and will increase its biodiesel production to 950.000 tons within the next few years. The biggest producers are Novaol and Diester Industrie from France, and ADM which mostly operates in the United States and Germany.

Spain used to be the biggest European producer of biodiesel, but Germany has come on very strongly. In total, European companies produced 490.000 tons of bioethanol in 2003, including intervention wine made from ethanol. In Germany, market players such as Sudzucker and the Sauter Group have started off the year with an annual production capacity of 500.000 tons. However, the other countries do not sit still. In France, the Tereos Group plans to build two factories with capacities of 360.000 tons. Sweden’s own production capacity is limited, but the country imports large quantities of bioethanol from Brazil.
